If you are a fan of RuPaul’s drag race, the name Rock M. Sakura is not new to you. Competing on season 12 under the name Sakura, she is an Anime Queen, often taking from her love of cosplay and using it with her drag performances. Appearing as a judge in Crunchyroll-Hime’s Cosplay Cup, we sat down with Rock M. Sakura to learn more about her love of cosplay, and how she utilizes it in her drag performances.
Geekset: We’ve seen it be referenced before that Cosplay is what helped you get your start in drag, what would you say are some of the similarities between the two fashions?
Sakura: Well, cosplay and drag have one big similarity between them. They let you transform and change into something you want to be. When I first started cosplaying, I would cosplay as characters that were mostly male and I thought were cute. As I began to cosplay female characters I got to explore my gender a bit more, and play around with feminine aspects of myself.
Geekset: Who would you say is your biggest anime influence?
Sakura: My biggest anime influence is Cardcaptor Sakura from Clamp. The anime is my namesake for a number of reasons. I was attracted to the constant switching of costumes, the designs of the CLOW cards, but most of all I was drawn in by the way the main character navigates the world through kindness, empathy, and love.
